A walk along Hendry’s Beach
Chorus of the wolf
I never should have come here
never should have stepped free
never should have left the den
But then I never would have seen the sun
never heard a river run
I’d have never seen the laughing, splashing in your eyes
or the shadow of your hair against the moon
Never should have come here
never should have left
never should have claimed the warm
Never should have spoken
left the door unbroken
shelter built it’s own storm
Lightfoot and laughing, we step with the sand
snug between cliffs and water
a world either way, ocean and sky
Walk with the wind until we turn
A past full of sparkles and warm spots all shared
a host of discomforts ignored in the breeze.
quiet small motions, living so close
fresh air, big sky, strong and free
Never should have spoken
smash the broken wall
the air outside is cold
What have I done here
lost another world
somewhere something’s broken
Seagull cries scratch on the ocean air
the sky steps aside when we stop
some bright stone has caught your eye,
washed by the rising tide.
Never would have felt the sun
never seen a river run
never taste the moisture rising from your breath
Never would have known we won.
